The causes of leaf deformation in Savoy cabbage can include the Cabbage leaf curl virus (CaLCuV) from the Geminiviridae family, which causes yellowing and mosaic, as well as damage caused by pests such as cabbage aphids or whiteflies. In addition to biotic factors, physiological disorders such as water stress, temperature fluctuations, and calcium or boron deficiency lead to leaf curl.
Unlike fruit crops, there are no specific pathogen races or generally accepted resistance genes for this symptom in Savoy cabbage. Laboratory studies of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana revealed a link between resistance to the CaLCuV virus and the expression of the CRUMPLED LEAF (CRL) gene, but this gene is not used as a resistance marker in commercial cabbage breeding.
