Tillering of Spelt

Triticum aestivum L. subsp. spelta (L.) Thell.

A morphobiological trait of spelt that determines the number of stems per plant and influences yield formation and weed suppression.

In the reference 3 varieties crop Spelt, where this is mentioned in the description.

Spelt tillering is classified into total tillering, which reflects the number of all stems formed by the plant, and productive tillering, which accounts only for stems with a fully developed ear. In studies of breeding lines of this crop, productive tillering typically varies in the range of 1.7 to 3.0 stems per plant.

High tillering allows spelt to compete effectively with weed vegetation due to the formation of a dense stand. This index correlates closely with the final grain yield, though its realization strongly depends on seeding rates, nitrogen nutrition levels, and the cultivar's lodging potential, which increases with excessive stem biomass development.
