Powdery mildew of spelt

Triticum aestivum L. subsp. spelta (L.) Thell.

A fungal disease of spelt caused by the obligate pathogen Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici. It manifests as a white coating on vegetative and generative organs, reducing photosynthetic activity and impairing grain filling.

In the reference 23 varieties crop Spelt, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Blumeria graminis (DC.) E.O. Speer f. sp. tritici, which infects various wheat species. Initial symptoms consist of a white cobweb-like coating of mycelium and conidia on leaves, leaf sheaths, stems, and glumes. As the pathogen develops, the coating thickens, acquires a dirty gray hue, and fruiting bodies, known as cleistothecia, form within the mycelial structure.

Infection leads to chlorophyll degradation, reduced tillering, and premature tissue necrosis, which negatively impacts yield. Spelt serves as a source of resistance genes designated by the index Pm. Both common genes, such as Pm2, Pm4b, and Pm6a, and specific genes, including PmKu, PmLsy-93, and the recessive allele PmSp that provides immunity to the pathogen, have been identified in the crop's genotypes.
