Allium cepa L.

The onion bulb is the primary edible organ, evaluated based on morphometric traits (weight, shape, height-to-diameter index) and biological properties (number of growing points, divisibility, neck maturity).

To characterize an onion variety, one evaluates the weight (from 20 to 250 g or more), shape, color of the dry and succulent scales, as well as the number of bulbs formed from a single basal plate (divisibility). An important indicator is the thickness of the neck, the degree of closure of which after drying determines suitability for long-term storage.

The number of growing points, which expresses the number of buds on the basal plate, along with the number and density of dry scales, serves as a criterion for selecting cultivation and post-harvest processing technologies. Uniformity of bulbs in shape and size is a critical parameter for ensuring the efficiency of mechanical harvesting and subsequent product grading.
