To determine the oil content of sunflower, both laboratory methods, such as Soxhlet extraction and pulsed NMR spectroscopy, and rapid IR spectroscopy methods are used. The value is calculated as a percentage of the total seed mass, adjusted for moisture content, and a base level of 44–46% is typically established for market calculations.
Oil accumulation is significantly influenced by agrotechnical and climatic factors. Phosphate fertilizers contribute to higher oil content, whereas excess nitrogen, as well as drought and high temperatures during the seed-filling period, can reduce this indicator. Furthermore, harvest timing affects final oil content, as seed over-ripening leads to quality degradation and loss of seed mass.
