Tissue necrosis in soft wheat occurs either as a hypersensitive response (HR) in the presence of resistance genes, as a sign of susceptibility to necrotrophic pathogens, or as a symptom of physiological stress.

In soft wheat, tissue necrosis is often the result of the plant's interaction with necrotrophic pathogens, such as Parastagonospora nodorum and Pyrenophora tritici-repentis species. These fungi produce necrotrophic effectors that, upon interaction with plant susceptibility proteins (e.g., Tsn1), induce cell death, thereby facilitating disease development.
From a genetic perspective, necrosis serves as an indicator of resistance via the hypersensitive response. For example, the Sr6 gene triggers local tissue death at the site of pathogen penetration, preventing the spread of infection. There are also physiological forms of necrosis, such as leaf tip necrosis, which may be genetically linked to rust resistance genes or caused by oxidative stress from temperature fluctuations and chemical exposure.
