For a normal harvest, cherry plum requires the pollination of up to 20% of its flowers, which is due to a biological characteristic of most cultivars—self-sterility. Unlike pome fruit crops, cherry plum is extremely demanding regarding the presence of pollinator cultivars, as pollen from its own flowers does not provide effective fertilization.

The selection of pollinators must be carried out strictly among isochromosomal species, which include other cherry plum cultivars and Japanese plum (Prunus salicina). It is unacceptable to use European plum (Prunus domestica) or blackthorn due to their incompatibility with cherry plum. A critically important condition is the strict synchronization of flowering times between the primary cultivar and the pollinator.

Cherry plum possesses high selectivity during fertilization; therefore, effective cultivar pairs are determined by the method of reciprocal crosses. In breeding and horticulture, there are no universal pollinators, and pair compatibility is established in the process of individual cultivar evaluation to achieve pollen fertility levels of up to 94%.
