To assess the vigor of cherry plum, indicators such as tree height and canopy volume are used, as well as the intensity of annual growth and trunk diameter. Varieties are classified as vigorous, reaching 4–8 meters, medium-vigorous with a height of 2–4 meters, and low-vigorous, comparable to shrub-like forms of cherry.
The vigor indicator is a determining factor when designing plantations: it dictates planting distances from 2.5 to 4 meters, as well as the need for specific pruning. In breeding and production, priority is given to varieties with a low-volume canopy to reduce labor costs for formation and harvesting.
