Cherry Plum Propagation by Cuttings

Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.

Cherry plum is characterized by a high regenerative capacity during softwood cutting, allowing for the production of own-rooted seedlings in a single season. When using hardwood cuttings, the efficiency of the process depends significantly on varietal characteristics.

In the reference 5 varieties crop Cherry plum, where this is mentioned in the description.

Softwood cutting is a highly effective method for propagating most cherry plum varieties, surpassing many stone fruit crops, including plum, in terms of survival rates. Own-rooted plants obtained by this method have the ability to restore their varietal aerial parts in case of damage and demonstrate increased yield.

When switching to the use of hardwood cuttings, pronounced varietal differences become apparent. Varieties such as Kubanskaya Kometa, Puteshestvennitsa, Purpurovaya, Vasilyevskaya 41, Neberdzhayskaya Rannyaya, Zhemchuzhina, and Lykhny show good rooting. At the same time, the varieties Obilnaya, Desertnaya, Fioletovaya Desertnaya, and Studencheskaya root significantly more difficultly.

In cases of low rooting success, characteristic of a number of hybrid forms, it is recommended to replace cutting with the method of grafting onto seedling rootstocks. To stimulate root formation during propagation by cuttings, auxin-type growth regulators and other specialized preparations are used.
