Diascia irrigation

Diascia Link & Otto

Irrigating Diascia requires maintaining constant moderate substrate moisture while ensuring quality drainage. The crop is highly sensitive to waterlogging, which triggers rot, and requires watering as soon as the top layer of soil dries out.

In the reference 5 varieties crop Twinspur, where this is mentioned in the description.

Diascia has strict water regime requirements due to its origins in the mountainous regions of South Africa. The soil should be kept in a 'wrung-out sponge' state, avoiding both total desiccation and excess moisture in the root zone. The optimal time for watering is when the top 2.5 centimeters of the substrate have dried out.

During periods of extreme heat, the plant's water requirement increases; however, even at high temperatures, it is important to maintain a moderate watering regime to prevent root rot. Following summer rejuvenation pruning, irrigation intensity should be increased to stimulate new shoot growth. When growing in containers, it is critical to prevent water stagnation in saucers and ensure unimpeded drainage through the drainage holes.

Unlike moisture-loving annuals, Diascia possesses moderate drought tolerance and reacts much more severely to overwatering. Excess moisture quickly leads to the development of root and stem rots; therefore, the care strategy should focus on ensuring stable moisture levels paired with an impeccable drainage system.
