Kohlrabi field cultivation

Brassica oleracea L. (Kohlrabi Group)

Growing kohlrabi in open ground is characterized by no need for hilling, the possibility of multiple harvests per season, and the requirement for strict control over stem harvest timing.

In the reference 67 varieties crop Kohlrabi, where this is mentioned in the description.

When growing kohlrabi in open ground, hilling is not required, as the stem tuber forms above the soil surface. An important feature is the seedling planting requirement: unlike other cabbage species, it is not recommended to plant them too deeply in the soil.

Due to a short growing season of 38 to 55 days, the crop is used as an intercrop, planted between rows of late-maturing crops or in the place of harvested radishes and lettuce. It is important to harvest as soon as a diameter of about 10 cm is reached to avoid the pulp becoming coarse.

Kohlrabi has high cold tolerance: late varieties can withstand autumn frosts down to –3…–5 °C without losing stem quality, which allows for extending their time in the garden bed.
