Outdoor cultivation of Hyacinthus orientalis

Hyacinthus orientalis L.

Agrotechnology for hyacinths in open ground requires mandatory bulb stratification, ensuring optimal drainage via a sand cushion, and strict adherence to crop rotation.

In the reference 25 varieties crop Common hyacinth, where this is mentioned in the description.

For successful flowering, hyacinths require a natural stratification period of 12–14 weeks at a temperature of 4–7°C. A crucial condition during planting is the creation of a sand cushion in the hole to divert moisture away from the basal plate, as the crop is highly sensitive to rot when water stagnates. The planting depth is 15–20 cm; however, in heavy soils, this depth is reduced to minimize pressure on the bulb.

The plant requires an annual change of planting site with a return to the original plot no sooner than after 3 years, and planting after other bulbous crops is undesirable due to shared diseases. During the vegetation and budding stages, the hyacinth requires consistently moist soil; however, during the dormant phase, excess moisture becomes detrimental. Bulbs used for forcing are capable of recovering in open ground within 1–2 years after being transplanted into the garden.

All vegetative parts of the hyacinth contain toxic alkaloids that can cause contact dermatitis. For this reason, all agrotechnical operations in open ground, including planting, maintenance, and bulb harvesting, must be carried out using protective gloves.
