Field cultivation of corn salad

Valerianella locusta (L.) Laterr.

Corn salad is grown in open fields as a cold-hardy off-season crop capable of withstanding frosts down to -10 °C. Due to its sensitivity to long photoperiods and high temperatures, sowing is primarily conducted in early spring or late summer.

The crop prefers light loamy soils with a neutral pH level (6.5–7.0) and requires adequate lime content. In open fields, sowing is carried out in several stages: in early spring, in August, or before winter in September–October. For overwintering crops, covering with straw, coniferous branches, or peat is recommended for successful survival.

Corn salad is extremely sensitive to light conditions and temperature: long days and overheating trigger rapid bolting and a decline in the flavor quality of the leaves. Despite being moisture-loving, the crop poorly tolerates waterlogging, which leads to root rot. Excessive nitrogen fertilization, especially with fresh manure, is not recommended due to the risk of nitrate accumulation and a reduction in the marketability of the produce.
