Winter and Spring Forms of Emmer

Triticum turgidum L. subsp. dicoccum (Schrank ex Schübl.) Thell.

Emmer (Triticum dicoccum) is represented by both winter and spring forms, the development of which is regulated by Vrn genes. Unlike wild emmer, domesticated emmer has a wide cultivation area due to the selective breeding of forms with varying vernalization requirements.

Domesticated emmer (Triticum turgidum subsp. dicoccum) exists in both winter and spring forms, which allows the crop to be cultivated in various agro-climatic zones. Winter forms require a period of low temperatures to transition to heading, while spring forms do not have such a strict requirement for cold vernalization.

The distribution of these forms has developed historically and depends on the region: while winter forms predominate in production in European countries and Ukraine, spring forms have historically been more common in Russia. At the same time, the biological developmental characteristics of emmer, such as hulled grain and rachis fragility, remain unchanged regardless of the form type.
