Yield of Emmer Wheat

Triticum turgidum L. subsp. dicoccum (Schrank ex Schübl.) Thell.

The yield of emmer is estimated by taking into account the presence of a dense, non-threshing husk that accounts for up to one-quarter of the grain mass. The average pure kernel yield is 76–77% of the total harvest.

In the reference 12 varieties crop Emmer, where this is mentioned in the description.

When calculating the yield of emmer, it is necessary to distinguish between the mass of the hulled grain and the mass of the cleaned kernel after dehulling. Standard combine calibrations, set for common wheat, provide inaccurate results due to the structural characteristics of the ear and high husk content. In field trials, the average yield is recorded at 2.5 t/ha, with a potential of up to 5.0–5.2 t/ha under favorable conditions, which is 58–69% of the productivity of modern soft wheat varieties.

Important factors in yield formation are the 1000-kernel weight, which averages about 31 g, and the crop's tendency to lodge under excessive nitrogen nutrition. Harvesting efficiency also depends on the timing, as many heirloom varieties have a brittle rachis, which leads to losses if harvesting is delayed. Despite lower gross yield, emmer demonstrates high ecological stability, allowing it to maintain productivity on marginal lands.
