Emmer rust

Triticum turgidum L. subsp. dicoccum (Schrank ex Schübl.) Thell.

Emmer rust is caused by the fungi Puccinia graminis, Puccinia triticina, and Puccinia striiformis. Emmer is an important genetic reservoir of resistance due to the presence of specific resistance genes Sr2, Yr15, Yr36, and Yr84.

The causative agents of the disease in emmer are the same pathogen species as in other wheat species: Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (stem rust), Puccinia triticina (leaf rust), and Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (stripe rust). Symptoms of the infection appear similarly: stem rust forms dark brown pustules on the stems, leaf rust forms small orange-red pustules on the leaves, and stripe rust forms bright yellow pustules arranged in stripes along the veins.

Emmer is of high value for breeding due to its unique resistance genes. Key loci for protection against stem rust include the Sr2 gene, and sources of resistance to the Ug99 race are also being investigated. Resistance to stripe rust is provided by the Yr15, Yr36, and Yr84 genes; furthermore, specific quantitative trait loci with the prefix QYr.emmer- have been identified in the emmer genome.
