Lodging in Emmer

Triticum turgidum L. subsp. dicoccum (Schrank ex Schübl.) Thell.

Lodging in emmer is a critical agronomic parameter affecting mechanized harvesting due to the plant's height and spike structure. Resistance to this phenomenon is assessed using scales from flowering to full maturity.

In the reference 15 varieties crop Emmer, where this is mentioned in the description.

Emmer is characterized by a high susceptibility to lodging, associated with its plant morphology: tall varieties with a stem length of up to 150 cm are prone to bending under the influence of wind and precipitation. This creates significant difficulties during harvest, as the brittleness of the rachis and the presence of glumes impede threshing and induce grain losses, while simultaneously increasing the risk of fungal spike diseases.

For breeding purposes, lodging is evaluated in the interval from flowering (BBCH 69) to maturity (BBCH 87) using point scales from 1 to 9 or the percentage of the affected area. Breeding of modern varieties focuses on developing short-stature forms with improved strength of the lower internodes and an increased stem diameter, as simply varying plant height does not guarantee resistance.
