Citrus reticulata Blanco
A fungal disease of mandarin caused by Elsinoë fawcettii, manifesting as warty outgrowths on leaves, shoots, and fruit. The disease significantly reduces the commercial value of produce by deforming the surface of fruit and young tissues.
In the reference 3 varieties crop Mandarin orange, where this is mentioned in the description.
The causative agent of scab is the fungus Elsinoë fawcettii (anamorph Sphaceloma fawcettii). The pathogen is classified by pathotypes that determine its host range: the most aggressive FBHR pathotype affects a wide range of citrus, including mandarin, whereas the FNHR pathotype has a limited host range.
Symptoms appear on actively growing tissues. Pale spots emerge on leaves, which transform into corky outgrowths that deform the leaf. Grayish or pinkish excrescences develop on fruits, which darken with age, rendering the fruits unmarketable. Infection of young twigs causes their deformation and stunted growth.
Resistance of mandarin cultivars is evaluated using phenotypic scales (from 0 to 6 points), as specific letter designations for resistance genes are absent in catalogs. Resistant cultivars possess the ability to recognize effector proteins of the fungus, which initiates a protective immune response in the plant.
