Grafting is the primary method for propagating mandarin due to the weak root systems of seedlings and the difficulty of rooting cuttings. The choice of rootstock is critical for ensuring resistance to soil stresses, diseases, and for regulating tree vigor.

Poncirus trifoliata is used as a rootstock for mandarin, providing high cold hardiness and resistance to Phytophthora, as well as Cleopatra mandarin, which is valued for its adaptation to alkaline, saline soils and drought tolerance. Hybrids such as Carrizo Citrange are also used to control tree vigor and provide resistance to the Citrus tristeza virus.
When selecting a rootstock, it is necessary to consider graft compatibility, as some mandarin varieties may show signs of decline when grafted onto certain citrus rootstocks. Trifoliata requires caution when used on highly acidic or calcareous soils, where a decrease in rootstock efficiency is observed.
