Alsike clover (Trifolium hybridum L.) cultivation includes diploid (2n = 16) and tetraploid (2n = 32) forms, which differ in morphology, vegetation periods, and seed productivity.

Diploid and tetraploid forms of alsike clover differ significantly in their physical characteristics: tetraploids are distinguished by more vigorous plant growth, increased size of leaves, flowers, and 1000-seed weight, as well as later flowering. Under favorable conditions, tetraploid varieties demonstrate higher yields of green mass and dry matter compared to their diploid counterparts.
Polyploidization affects seed productivity and plant fertility, with tetraploids typically characterized by the formation of a larger number of underdeveloped pollen grains. In seed production, spatial isolation of diploid and tetraploid varieties is a mandatory requirement, as cross-pollination between them can lead to a decrease in seed yield by up to 50%.
