Wild cherry plum is a universal rootstock for plum, peach, and nectarine, characterized by high compatibility with most varieties. Trees on cherry plum seed rootstocks are notable for their vigorous growth, tolerance to calcareous soils, and ability to withstand temporary flooding, while seedlings produce almost no root suckers.

For the selection of clonal rootstocks, cherry plum is used in hybridization to modify growth vigor and adaptability.
