Lodging in shrubby Sedum forms is a physiological disorder manifested by the loss of the upright habit, causing the plant to "fall open" and reducing its ornamental value due to excessive nutrition or light deficiency.

For representatives of the genus Sedum L., lodging is an aesthetic problem where stems, which are normally upright, tilt or fall to the ground. This leads to the disintegration of the shoot system, exposure of the basal parts, and the accumulation of dead residues within the clump, which is unacceptable for shrubby forms such as Sedum spectabile. Conversely, for ground-covering prostrate species, lodging is a natural growth form and is not considered a negative trait.

The primary factors provoking the loss of vertical geometry are shoot etiolation under light deficiency and excessive growth stimulation from over-fertilization. There are no standardized quantitative scales for evaluating this trait; therefore, breeders prefer cultivars with "interlocking" branching, which possess strong, intertwined stems capable of mechanically maintaining the shrub's shape throughout the growing season.
