Apple productivity

A complex indicator of the ability of apple varieties and scion-rootstock combinations to form a stable crop volume, evaluated by the weight of fruit per unit of area or canopy volume.

To assess apple productivity, absolute yield indicators per tree or hectare are used, as well as specific parameters: kg per cm² of trunk cross-sectional area, kg per m³ of canopy volume, and kg per m² of its projection area. Important quality characteristics include indices of regularity and stability of fruiting under changing conditions.

In intensive orchards using modern technologies, yields reach 35–50 t/ha, and for highly productive scion-rootstock combinations, the target indicator is considered 15–20 kg per tree. In breeding studies, high productivity is determined by a significant excess over the control of 4–17 kg per tree.

The realization of productivity potential depends on the scion-rootstock combination, which determines precocity and vigor, as well as on orchard design, including planting density and type of canopy training, for example, "slender spindle" or "French axis".
