To assess the productivity of Triticum durum Desf., a system of quantitative parameters is used: the number of productive stems, spike length, the number of spikelets and grains per spike, grain weight per spike, and the thousand-kernel weight (TKW). A key indicator of grain development and size is the TKW, the values of which in experimental studies range from 24 to 49 grams.
The realization of productivity potential is directly linked to the intensity of the leaf apparatus, especially the flag leaf, and the length of the growing season. While winter forms possess a yield potential 1.5–2 times higher than spring forms, the overall agroclimatic resilience of durum wheat remains lower than that of common wheat, necessitating a combination of high yield with ecological stability.
