Diseases
Prunus persica (L.) Batsch
A group of peach diseases manifesting as necrotic spots of various etiologies. The most significant are shot hole, caused by the fungus Wilsonomyces carpophilus, and bacterial spot, caused by the pathogen Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni.
In the reference 120 varieties crop Peach, where this is mentioned in the description.
Shot hole manifests as reddish-purple spots where the tissue eventually dies and drops out, forming characteristic holes; in cases of severe disease development, this leads to premature defoliation. Bacterial spot is characterized by the appearance of angular spots restricted by leaf veins, which change color from water-soaked to black and are often surrounded by a yellow halo, causing leaf drop.
In agronomic practice, leaf spots caused by fungi of the genus Cercospora, which form a dark margin, and infections by the fungus Nigrospora sphaerica are also encountered. Specific pathogen races for these diseases on peach have not been identified, and cultivar breeding is focused on increasing field resistance without the use of mapped resistance genes.
