Diseases
Rhynchosporium
Rhynchosporium is a dangerous fungal disease of barley and rye, manifesting as leaf blotches and leading to premature drying and significant yield losses.
Mentioned in descriptions 1 358 varieties reference book.
Rhynchosporium manifests as the formation of oval or irregular gray, gray-green, or dull green blotches on leaves, leaf sheaths, and occasionally stems and spikes. In barley, the blotches often have a dark brown margin, whereas in rye it may be absent; sporulation may develop on the underside of the leaf, and in cases of severe infection, the leaves dry out.
The development of the pathogen depends on weather conditions, favoring a humid temperate climate with temperatures from +15°C to +20°C and relative humidity above 80%. Risk factors include late sowing dates, high seeding density, weed abundance, excess nitrogen, and the presence of infected crop residues.
Resistance of varieties is often quantitative and determined by a set of loci, however, due to the high variability of the fungus, the resistance status may be lost. The evaluation of varieties is conducted during multi-year field trials using scoring scales or laboratory methods of leaf segment inoculation with the calculation of a resistance index.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
