A group of dangerous wheat diseases caused by fungi of the genus Puccinia, including leaf, yellow, and stem rust. It is characterized by high pathogen variability and is managed through breeding based on specialized resistance genes Lr, Yr, and Sr.

The disease is represented by three main types: leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina, yellow rust caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, and stem rust, for which the pathogen is Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici. The pathogens possess high variability, forming numerous races and pathotypes capable of overcoming previously effective plant defenses, which makes the emergence of new aggressive isolates, such as Ug99, a critical threat to crop yields.
The symptoms of the infection are specific: leaf rust forms scattered rusty-brown pustules on the leaves, yellow rust forms stripes of lemon-yellow pustules parallel to the veins, and stem rust is characterized by large, linear pustules on the stems. In breeding, resistance to these pathogens is marked by the Lr, Yr, and Sr gene indices, respectively. In addition to race-specific genes, breeding efforts rely on adult-plant resistance genes, such as Lr34/Yr18, which provide more durable protection.
