Self-fertility of sunflower

Helianthus annuus L.

Sunflower self-fertility is a genetically determined ability of the plant to set seeds through self-pollination in the absence of insects. This trait is critical for yield stability under adverse pollination conditions.

In the reference 20 varieties crop Sunflower, where this is mentioned in the description.

The degree of sunflower self-fertility is defined as the ratio of the number of filled achenes in heads isolated from external pollination to the control values. In breeding practice, a simplified method of counting the number of filled achenes is often used as an indirect indicator of the self-pollination capacity.

Sunflower population varieties are characterized by low self-fertility rates, averaging from 6.8% to 8.9%. Values at the level of 30% or lower are considered insufficient, which makes the crop dependent on entomophilous pollination and increases the risk of empty seeds when pollinator insects are scarce.

Hybrids with increased self-fertility provide more stable productivity in regions with low bee activity and unfavorable weather conditions. Furthermore, this trait plays an important role in seed production for maintaining the purity of maternal lines with minimal influence from cross-pollination.
