Self-fertility of apple

Malus domestica (Suckow) Borkh.

The ability of an apple tree to form ovaries when pollinated with its own pollen, measured as the percentage of fruit set relative to the total number of pollinated flowers.

The degree of apple self-fertility is determined by the method of inflorescence isolation, where buds are protected from pollinating insects and artificially pollinated with pollen of the same cultivar. Experimental recording of fruit set requires observations over at least three seasons to mitigate the influence of weather conditions on the index.

Based on the level of fruit set, apple cultivars are classified as self-infertile with an index of 0 to 4%, partially self-fertile, and cultivars with an increased capacity for self-pollination, reaching 15–40%. The majority of commercial cultivars are self-infertile, which necessitates the mandatory planting of pollinators to ensure stable productivity.
