Self-fertility of apple

Based on the level of fruit set, apple cultivars are classified as self-infertile with an index of 0 to 4%, partially self-fertile, and cultivars with an increased capacity for self-pollination, reaching 15–40%. The majority of commercial cultivars are self-infertile, which necessitates the mandatory planting of pollinators to ensure stable productivity.
