Variety traits
Vigor is the genetic ability of a variety for intensive vegetative biomass accumulation or an indicator of seed viability reflecting germination energy and the ability to overcome soil resistance.
Mentioned in descriptions 53 548 varieties reference book.
The vigor of a variety is manifested in the overall development power of aerial organs, including tillering intensity, shoot length, and the rate of leaf area formation. As a seed characteristic, this indicator reflects the ability of seedlings to develop successfully under actual field conditions by pushing through the soil layer, which distinguishes it from standard laboratory germination.
During variety testing, development intensity is assessed visually or through biometric indicators, such as plant height and crown diameter, in comparison with reference samples. Objectivity of the assessment is achieved only under identical agrotechnical conditions, as the manifestation of this trait depends directly on the availability of nutrients, moisture, temperature, and light to the plants.
Hereditary predisposition to vigor determines the suitability of a variety for specific technologies. Vigorous varieties have an advantage in competition with weeds, while less vigorous forms are preferable for intensive technologies that allow for the use of high-density planting schemes and facilitate mechanized harvesting. At the same time, the general state of the plants and the incidence of phytopathogens can significantly suppress the natural growth potential of any variety.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
