Cytoplasmic Male Sterility in Barley

Hordeum vulgare L.

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) in barley is an experimental breeding tool limited in practical application due to side effects. The trait remains under investigation and is not used in commercial seed production.

In the reference 7 varieties crop Barley, where this is mentioned in the description.

Barley forms with CMS have been obtained primarily through wide hybridization, for example, using the cytoplasm of Hordeum jubatum and the nucleus of Hordeum sativum. A key biological limitation in using these lines is a significant extension of the vegetation period, which leads to a lack of flowering synchrony between parental components and prevents the production of hybrid seeds.

The assessment of sterility and fertility status in breeding work is carried out by visual observation of androecium development, analysis of pollen viability, and accounting for seed set upon crossing. Research identifies sterility maintainer lines and fertility restorer lines; however, standardized quantitative parameters for the trait for industrial practice have not yet been developed.
