Cytoplasmic Male Sterility in Rice

Oryza sativa L.

A genetic mechanism for preventing self-pollination in rice, used to create F1 hybrids with a heterosis effect. The system is based on the use of lines with complete pollen sterility, ensuring high purity of hybrid seeds.

In the reference 15 varieties crop Rice, where this is mentioned in the description.

The use of CMS in rice allows for overcoming the crop's self-pollination, which is necessary for producing first-generation hybrids with a yield increase of 15–20%. For successful hybridization, maternal A-lines must possess 100% pollen and spikelet sterility, while paternal R-lines must have the ability to restore F1 hybrid fertility to above 90%.

The cultivation technology requires maternal forms to possess specific traits, such as stigma exertion and timely spikelet opening for cross-pollination. Line purity control is carried out using qPCR analysis of mitochondrial markers to exclude B-line impurities, with sterility stability potentially depending on temperature and humidity conditions during the microsporogenesis phase.
