Cytoplasmic Male Sterility in Sweet Cherry

The phenomenon of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is not a characteristic trait of sweet cherry. The primary biological mechanism regulating the fertility of this crop is gametophytic self-incompatibility.

Cytoplasmic male sterility is not considered a biological feature of sweet cherry, unlike some other members of the Rosaceae family. Instances of sterility in this crop can only be recorded under experimental conditions in highly inbred lines, which is due to inbreeding depression.

Instead of CMS mechanisms, the reproductive biology of sweet cherry is determined by gametophytic self-incompatibility, which is controlled by a multi-allelic S-locus. This system prevents self-fertilization, so it is necessary to select cultivars with compatible S-genotypes to ensure yield.
