The main pest of chrysanthemum is the chrysanthemum aphid Macrosiphoniella sanborni, which infests young shoots and causes deformation of plant organs. The pest also acts as a vector for mosaic viruses and chrysanthemum virus B.

The chrysanthemum aphid Macrosiphoniella sanborni colonizes young parts of the plant, leading to leaf curling, shoot curvature, and general growth inhibition. Damage to reproductive organs causes deformation and distortion of flowers, reducing the market value of the product. Additional damage is caused by honeydew, which promotes the development of sooty mold.

At the molecular level, plant susceptibility is governed by the CmHRE2-like and CmWRKY53 genes, the increased expression of which makes the chrysanthemum more vulnerable. In resistant cultivars, high activity of antioxidant defense enzymes such as POD, PPO, PAL, COMT, and F5H has been noted. Most commercial cultivars are characterized as highly susceptible to this pest.
