Variety traits
Olea europaea L.
The ability of olive trees to withstand abiotic stresses and biotic threats, evaluated through morphological, physiological, and biochemical indicators that determine survival and yield stability under adverse conditions.
In the reference 38 varieties crop Olive, where this is mentioned in the description.
When assessing olive salt tolerance, growth dynamics, the degree of tissue necrosis, and sodium ion content are analyzed, as well as the efficiency of photosystem II via chlorophyll fluorescence and stomatal conductance. Cultivars are classified by their level of resistance based on their response to NaCl concentration.
Frost tolerance is determined at temperatures from -7°C to -10°C, assessing shoot damage and the plants' regenerative capacity. Olive trees adapt to drought through anatomical features, such as the thickness of the palisade parenchyma, and high water-use efficiency.
Regarding biotic threats, such as verticillium wilt caused by Verticillium dahliae, tolerance is linked to root system architecture, lignin levels, and biomass distribution. Selecting varieties that account for these characteristics allows for olive cultivation in areas with limiting factors.
