The variety is a traditional genotype from the vicinity of Melpignano (Salento region). Due to the spread of the Xylella fastidiosa bacterium in the region, the variety is at risk of extinction, and work is underway on its identification, protection, and propagation under controlled conditions.

Fruits of this variety are suitable for both oil production and table olive consumption, with a characteristic sweet taste. Research is being conducted on the potential for using these olives for processing and quick preparation. The variety is being studied by scientific institutions to evaluate genetic tolerance to bacterial pathogens.
