The variety is traditional for the surroundings of the city of Estepa in the Seville province, as well as the Puente Genil and Montilla areas in the Córdoba province. There is a possibility of genetic similarity or synonymy of this variety with the Alameño de Cabra variety.
The variety name reflects the dark color of its foliage and fruit. The variety is grown primarily for olive oil production. Agronomic studies note the tolerance of Negrillo de Estepa to verticillium wilt, however, the variety remains susceptible to anthracnose.
