The Negrea variety is part of the Ligurian olive genetic pool. Genetic studies show that it differs from other local varieties in the region and groups together with Mediterranean cultivars.

This variety is classified as an oil-producing cultivar and is intended for olive oil production. It is officially included in the documentation of the Liguria region as one of the traditional crops subject to protection.
