Variety traits
Pisum sativum L.
Pea tolerance is the ability of a cultivar to maintain productivity under conditions of abiotic stress, such as drought, high temperatures, soil salinity, or acidity.
In the reference 55 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.
The assessment of pea tolerance is based on comparing cultivar performance under stress and control conditions. For drought tolerance, the STI and GMP indices are used, evaluating changes in biomass and the number of pods. Thermotolerance is determined by the plant's ability to retain reproductive nodes and minimize flower/pod abortion at high temperatures, whereas salt tolerance is tested by germination rate and seedling growth in NaCl solutions.
Aluminum tolerance in peas is assessed using a rapid diagnostic method based on root length after exposure to aluminum (3 mg Al/L). Highly tolerant samples demonstrate intensive root growth of approximately 14 mm, while sensitive ones show minimal growth of 1–1.5 mm and tissue damage. Pea tolerance is specific to a particular factor, so cultivar selection requires consideration of the results from regional environmental trials.
