The primary cause of damage is the species Taeniothrips simplex. During the active growth period, insects cause the appearance of whitish spots on leaves and stems, which leads to subsequent tissue desiccation. When entering the flower buds, the pest triggers deformation and discoloration, often preventing the flowers from opening.
During storage, corms are attacked by insects that suck sap from the tissues under the scales. This leads to the formation of brown, crusty spots, severe shriveling, and desiccation of the corms. Infested planting material becomes sticky and produces weakened plants.
