The vegetation period of a variety is the time interval from sowing or emergence to the crop maturity phase. Unlike the meteorological growing season, which characterizes the time of year suitable for plant growth in a given area, this indicator is a biological characteristic of the variety and is measured in days.

The duration of the period depends on temperature, moisture availability, and nutrient supply, as well as on geographical latitude and day length. Photoperiod sensitivity and weather conditions in a particular season can significantly influence the rate of plant development, changing the number of days required for the variety to complete all growth phases.

During state variety testing, evaluation is carried out by observing the onset of phenological phases in test plots. Based on the data obtained, varieties are classified into maturity groups, such as early-maturing, mid-maturing, and late-maturing. This classification allows comparing the variety with a standard and determining its suitability for the climatic features of the growing zone.
