Verticillium wilt of tomato

Solanum lycopersicum L. var. lycopersicum

A fungal disease of the tomato vascular system caused by the pathogens Verticillium dahliae and V. albo-atrum. It is characterized by loss of turgor, V-shaped chlorosis of lower leaves, and xylem browning.

In the reference 99 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogens enter through the root system, colonizing vascular bundles, which leads to tracheomycotic wilt. External symptoms include daytime loss of turgor that does not recover at night, the formation of chlorotic V-shaped lesions on lower leaves, and subsequent necrosis. A cross-section of the stem or petioles reveals distinct browning of the vascular bundles.

In tomato breeding, the Ve gene is of key importance, providing resistance to race 1 of the pathogen Verticillium dahliae. For modern cultivars and hybrids, races 2 and 3 are also identified, which require specific resistance markers, such as VdR3e. In international classification, resistance to Verticillium wilt is designated by the code V, which indicates the presence of genetic protection against the pathogen.
