Eggplant Mosaic Viruses

Solanum melongena L.

Eggplant mosaic viruses are caused by a complex of viruses from the genera Tobamovirus, Cucumovirus, and Potyvirus. The disease manifests as leaf deformation, chlorotic spotting, and reduced plant productivity.

In the reference 39 varieties crop Eggplant, where this is mentioned in the description.

The most significant pathogens of the disease are Tobacco mosaic virus, Cucumber mosaic virus, and Pepino mosaic virus, as well as Potato virus X and Y. The infection spreads mechanically through tools, soil, and plant residues, as well as via insect vectors, particularly aphids.

Symptoms on eggplant include an alternation of light-green and dark-green areas on leaves, wrinkling, blistering, and vein clearing. Affected plants exhibit general growth inhibition and stunting, while fruits may show deformations, necrotic rings, and streaks.

To protect the crop, varieties with genetic resistance are used, which are classified according to the international ISF system as High Resistance (HR) or Intermediate Resistance (IR). In hybrid descriptions, resistance is indicated by the codes TMV, ToMV, and CMV, allowing agronomists to select material capable of maintaining productivity under disease pressure.
