The laboratory germination of Italian ryegrass seeds is determined at alternating temperatures from 20 to 30 °C, using light and pre-chilling. According to standards, the minimum acceptable value is at least 85% for elite seeds and at least 80% for certified seeds, with a 20% reduction allowed for freshly harvested seeds.

Field germination of ryegrass depends on the sowing depth, which is optimal within the range of 1–2 cm, and soil moisture, as a deficiency leads to a sharp decline in germination. Despite the crop's ability to germinate at soil temperatures from +5 °C, the most intensive seedling emergence is observed at +15…+20 °C, which is critical for planning seeding rates.
