Maize Germination

An indicator of the ability of maize seeds to produce normal seedlings under laboratory conditions, determined on the 7th day. It serves as the basis for calculating seeding rates and forecasting plant stand density in the field.

The determination of maize germination is regulated by state standards, according to which seeds are germinated in sand at a depth equal to the seed length, with the embryo positioned downward. Laboratory germination is recorded on the 7th day, while germination energy, which characterizes the uniformity of emergence, is recorded on the 4th day.

For elite maize seeds, the standard values for laboratory germination are about 96%, with germination energy reaching 90%. Field germination of seeds is always 25–40% lower than laboratory germination, which necessitates the inclusion of safety margins when calculating seeding rates to achieve the target crop density.

Maize germination is critically affected by environmental conditions, particularly soil warming at a depth of 8–10 cm to 14–16 °C. A delay in seedling emergence due to low germination energy or unfavorable conditions triggers intraspecific competition, which significantly reduces the final yield.
