Variety traits
Pyrus communis L.
A biometric indicator of cultivar vigor, measured from the soil surface to the apical point. The height of a pear tree determines its suitability for intensive cultivation technologies and pruning methods.
In the reference 34 varieties crop European pear, where this is mentioned in the description.
In pear breeding, three groups of cultivars are distinguished by vigor: dwarf (up to 3.5 m), semi-dwarf (3.5–4 m), and vigorous. Genetically determined dwarfism may be linked to the presence of specific genes; however, the final tree height in the orchard is always determined by the interaction between the scion and the rootstock, such as the use of clonal quince rootstocks.
Tree height directly affects the economic efficiency of cultivation by determining planting density and the feasibility of mechanized operations. Compact forms up to 4 meters simplify maintenance, pruning, pest control, and harvesting, whereas excessive vigor requires additional labor costs for growth management.
