Variety traits
Secale cereale L.
A morphological trait of rye defined as the distance from the soil surface to the top of the ear, excluding awns. The variability of this trait in cultivated varieties ranges from 80 to 180 cm.
In the reference 152 varieties crop Rye, where this is mentioned in the description.
Measurements are carried out on the main stem by taking a representative sample, for example, 10 plants at four points of the plot or 25 plants from each experimental replicate. The trait is closely related to lodging resistance: short-stemmed forms are more preferable for mechanized harvesting and intensive production technologies.
Tall-growing forms are historically characteristic of population varieties; however, they are susceptible to lodging, especially under excessive nitrogen nutrition. In hybrid forms, the manifestation of heterosis can lead to an increase in height, which requires breeders to find a balance between yield and stem strength.
