A complex indicator of adaptability characterizing plant resistance to critical negative temperatures, which directly depends on the state of the shallow root system and the presence of snow cover.

The winter hardiness of strawberries is assessed by the degree of damage to tissues and organs, including leaves and generative buds, under frost exposure. In field conditions, the resistance level is determined on a scale from 1 to 5, where low values correspond to minimal freezing, while laboratory assessment is conducted via artificial freezing in climatic chambers.

Due to the shallow location of the root system in the 20–30 cm layer, strawberries are critically dependent on snow cover thickness. In its absence, tissue damage begins at temperatures from -8 to -10°C, and complete plant death is possible at -15...-18°C. Highly winter-hardy varieties are capable of maintaining viability at temperatures down to -30...-35°C, provided there is stable snow cover.

The winter hardiness index is influenced by the variety type and the physiological state of the plants: everbearing varieties are often less resistant due to the depletion of nutrient reserves, and breaking dormancy during thaws leads to the loss of hardening. The most dangerous factors for the crop are sharp temperature fluctuations and the formation of an ice crust, which provokes freezing and soil heaving.
