The Llanisca variety is a traditional local chestnut common in the eastern part of Asturias. It is the result of many years of selection of the best trees by the local population, rather than targeted breeding.
The fruits of this variety have a shiny surface and small caliber; peeling is rated as easy to medium. The variety belongs to a group with ripening periods from mid-early to mid-late.
Due to its characteristics, the Llanisca harvest is most often sent to the processing industry for the production of flour, puree, and jams. Morphologically, the variety is distinguished by long stamens in male inflorescences and long spines on the cupules of the fruits.
