The Loiola variety is a traditional Italian cultivar widespread in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Its main specialization is processing, in particular flour production, unlike dessert varieties of the Marrone group.

The fruits are characterized by polyembryony and the presence of an intrusive pellicle that adheres tightly to the kernel, which significantly hinders their peeling. In terms of taste, the fruits possess a lower degree of sweetness compared to dessert varieties.

The variety is being studied within the framework of scientific research dedicated to chestnut pathogens, in particular its susceptibility to infection by the fungus Gnomoniopsis castaneae. The purity and conservation of this variety are maintained by a local consortium in the Modena region.
